Harvest of the Month features tasting tables with locally grown food

Starting this week, volunteers at every school will host a Harvest of the Month tasting table every third Tuesday of the month throughout the year. These tasting tables will highlight a locally grown food and the farmers that grew it. Occasionally farmers will visit schools during the tasting table events.  Connecting students with healthy foods by providing as much information and exposure as possible, is a goal of the Farm to School Program.  Research shows students will make healthier choices for themselves when providing this type of education, according to Farm-to-School Program Coordinator Beth Thiel. Two school garden coordinators will start working at four elementary schools this Monday as part of the Americorps Program.

"Allowing students to grow, nurture, harvest and cook their own foods is another powerful way to connect them with healthy foods," said Thiel. "Although the coordinators are in place for this school year, the school garden program will thrive with parent volunteers.  Please talk to you child's teacher about volunteering in the school garden."

"I didn't think I liked tomatoes either, until I tasted them in the garden,"  said one kindergarten boy to another.
