Sharpstein Bird Watchers

Blue Mountain Audubon Society bring bird watching to Sharpstein Elementary

Today Sharpstein Elementary first graders had an introduction to bird watching on their campus in collaboration with the Blue Mountain Audubon Society. Students were provided binoculars to spot the various bird species in the trees at their school thanks to a feeder put up last week by members of the Blue Mountain Audubon Society. Each class watched for 15 minutes and then reported their data to the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is a four-day count happening throughout the world.

“To encourage children to participate at home, Mr. Albert Dunn made each student a bird feeder to take home and hang to attract birds,” said retired teacher Kay Barga who helped coordinate the event. “They will then report their findings to the Great Backyard Bird Count as well.”

Barga said it was wonderful seeing the students so excited and hopes this inspires them to further explore nature and the world around them.
