Envirothon Team On to State

Wa-Hi students qualify for state following Southeast Regional Envirothon competition

Walla Walla High School students competed in the Southeast Regional Envirothon competition at Klemgard County Park. Wa-Hi placed first in all five categories and qualified for the state competition at the end of May. Envirothon is the largest outdoor environmental science competition in the United States and Canada for high school students.

Students compete in teams of five to demonstrate their knowledge in Soils, Forestry, Aquatics, Wildlife, and a current issue topic. Students learn about these sustainable practices and about environmental and conservation careers that work with their community to provide local solutions and strategies to address these challenges. This year’s current issue topic is Adapting to a Changing Climate. Science teacher Clayton Hudiburg is the team’s advisor.

Wa-Hi students competed in the following five areas:
• Wildlife identification and knowledge
• Soil properties and analysis
• Forestry
• Aquatic ecology
• A 10 minute presentation in which they made a proposal about local action to help combat desertification in the Lower Snake River Basin
