Wa-Hi's Jeraldine Enriquez to attend Whitman on Murr Scholarship

The Murr Scholarship Committee has announced the recipient of its Class of 2007 scholarship - Jeraldine "Jeri" Enriquez,

who graduates from Wa-Hi June 8.

The scholarship is awarded to a Wa-Hi senior on the basis of financial need and merit, and admission to Whitman is a prerequisite. It includes tuition and room and board for four years.

The first member of her family to attend college, Enriquez, who speaks three languages, graduates with a cumulative 3.55 grade point average and has been involved with an array of co-curricular activities. She earned a Blue Devil varsity letter in swimming all four years, participated in basketball, soccer, tennis, Wa-His Foreign Language Free Speech Club, Amnesty Club and International Club, and has served the greater community through the local blood drive.

Among comments in teacher recommendation letters: "exceptional student and very well-rounded"; "a model student, both in her academic responsibility and class participation"; "she contributes thoughtful insights to discussion, treats her peers with the utmost respect and consistently exceeds expectations."

"Shes an impressive young woman whose academic accomplishments and leadership will enhance the Whitman community. We remain ever grateful to the Murr Family Foundation for its support and for making possible for the finiest local students to attend Whitman."

The Murr Scholarship is sponsored by the Murr Family Foundation and combined with Whitman financial aid. Michael Murr and his wife, Eva, established a fund at Whitman specifically to help fund the education of one Wa-Hi graduate every year. Michael graduated from Wa-Hi in 1969; he was an excellent student and outstanding athlete and is a member of the Walla Walla Athletic Hall of Fame and has been recognized as a Graduate of Distinction. He went on to study at Harvard, where he earned his bachelor of arts and MBA degrees.

Wa-Hi continues to produce outstanding students who go on to attend Whitman. The Class of 2007 will send four to Whitman, including Enriquez, Awet Alazar, Anna Forge and Spring Lonneker. Other Murr Scholarship recipients who will retun to Whitman in the fall include Yasmeen (Colis) al-Marrikhi, Ben Vandonge and Meghan Carlson.
